Writers as Readers

Writers as Readers

The environments I have to have to be able to read can be very difficult. Of course the bed is one nice location, but I also really like to read on a bus or a train. Other places would be the beach, the backyard of my house, and in a classroom. However, I mostly need a quit atmosphere and not much distraction. If the TV is running or loud annoying songs are played I find it difficult to pay attention to the book; though, a little bit of background music is fine.

I like a lot of different kinds of books, but it needs a good summary or recommendation of someone to convince me to read a specific one. If I choose one by myself, I mostly choose thrillers and criminal novels. I like it if they are somehow connected to history and have a creative story included in it. Especially when a book is written out of the perspective of the bad person, mostly the killer, this is exciting, because these books are different from other ones.

Yes, there have been a lot of books that excited me to turn to the next page. Whenever there is a string of events that happen I really want to know what happens and I’m looking forward to what is happening. Examples would be books of Paul Cleave, but also the series Fear Street by Stine. However, it doesn’t always have to be super exciting. A good story is as good as a murder that has happened.

While I began to learn reading at school my mother helped me at home to read my first books. Therefore she chose short ones, in which a lot of words are replaced by little pictures and even the included bookmark string was a character of the book such as a pirate. It really helped me and gave me the fun I needed to read books, so I could read more difficult books soon.

If I would be asked who is my favorite author I would say Paul Cleave, because all of his books are amazing, though, there are not too many; he just started publishing books in 2006. However, since the question was, which book, I say it is The Cleaner written by Paul Cleave. This was his first book and it attracted me by the strange, but also funny description on the back. It was pretty much somethinge like: “Joe is a nice guy. He is a cleaner for the police station. But during the night he kills women.” After I read that I decided that I wanted to read that book and it turned out to be awesome. Paul Cleaves wrote his book out of many perspectives. Mostly it is Joe, a serial killer, who does not seem to be completely right in his head. He does not feel any guilt about his doings. Another character is Sally, his co-worker. She thinks he is a really good guy and the reader can see how she is mistaken, but comes closer and closer to find out, who Joe really is.

  3. You're lucky that your mom took the time to read to/with you when you were little. I believe doing so makes such a difference in all sorts of ways. I hope my little boy remembers reading with me when he is grown. I love to listen to him read...Thanks for sharing your thoughts here!
